LETTER: Drew student critical of university's 'short-sighted' forest development plan

Michael George (C’23) | Madison Eagle

“I can imagine students learning about how we solved our financial problems by celebrating and making our beautiful campus even more of a biodiversity hot-spot, as well as becoming a national leader on how to promote biodiversity and carbon sequestration. Drew must continue to have the pride of promoting itself as the “University in the Forest.”

Donations to save Noe Pond now benefit efforts to save Drew Forest

By Madison Eagle

“‘Nearly $13,000 remained of the funds raised through the efforts of Save Noe Pond and GSWA. We decided to put those resources to good use,’ said Rich Rein, one of the liaisons of Save Noe Pond.

The GSWA saw a natural connection with Save Noe Pond, a group dedicated to protecting the historic Noe Pond property from over-development that would bring substantial harm to the delicate wetlands and wildlife on and around the property, including the land adjacent to the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, GSWA Executive Director Sally Rubin said.”

LETTER: Does Drew really want to become the school that chopped down its forest?

Alexandra Kiely (C’ 2012) | Madison Eagle

“I am deeply concerned about what the future will hold for Drew if it goes through with this monumentally shortsighted decision. Condemning the forest will define Drew’s reputation for all time, but I don’t think the school has really considered the fallout. The overwhelming majority of colleges and universities across the country are environmentally focused and becoming more so all the time.”

Drew University student government calls for transparency on potential forest sale

By Alex Parker-Magyar for Madison Eagle

“The undergraduate student government at Drew University is looking for answers from the school’s president on the potential sale and development of a portion of the Drew Forest preserve.

The elected body representing Drew’s College of Liberal Arts made several ‘demands’ of President Thomas Schwarz in a resolution dated Wednesday, Feb. 23, stating that unclear communications from the university ‘have caused confusion, and the transparency of decisions made in regards to the sale of the Drew Forest and the impacts therefore mentioned will directly affect the Drew community.’”

A lesson in grassroots advocacy

“Have you heard of the Save the Drew Forest campaign? The answer, if you live in Madison or its surrounding towns, or if you went to Drew University, is very likely yes.

Frankly, if you are a resident of Madison, it seems it would be difficult not to have heard of the campaign at this point.”

Madison engages conservation group in effort to save Drew Forest

By Alex Parker-Magyar for Madison Eagle

“An application to develop a portion of the Drew University Forest Preserve for housing may ultimately come before the Planning Board, but the borough is seeking to bring in outside agencies to help preserve the land before it comes to that.

Madison has asked the Land Conservancy of New Jersey to collaborate with the borough and the university on the future of any forest land Drew may look to sell off, Borough Administrator Ray Codey said at a Borough Council meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 13. The nonprofit organization has worked to preserve hundreds of sites across the state.”

Health of Garden State forests is brought to the forefront at Madison Rotary meeting: Fate of Drew Forest discussed

By Nora McSorley for Madison Eagle

“The state’s ever-shrinking amount of forest land, including the possible sale of land in the 45-acre Drew University forest, was the topic of the day when the Madison Rotary met Thursday morning, April 29, virtually.

Guest speaker Sara Webb, a Drew University professor emerita of Biology and Environmental Studies, presented a grim picture but also discussed how best to care for the diverse but beleaguered forests in the state.”

Madison's Drew University forest restoration wins governor’s ecosystems award

By Madison Eagle

“Thousands of trees on Drew University’s campus at 36 Madison Ave. are now breathing a little easier thanks to an unprecedented forest rehabilitation campaign that replaced noxious plant life with native vegetation.

The restoration effort, led by Sara Webb, professor of biology, and Michael Kopas, director of facilities and special projects, captured the spirit of Drew’s commitment to the health of its campus – and the attention of Gov. Chris Christie, who named Drew the winner of the state’s Environmental Excellence Award for Healthy Ecosystems.”
